INTRODUCTION TO BUSINESS 161 (BIB16100)

This course is designed for the student who wants to explore various areas of business and obtain an understanding and application of how business works in society. Topics covered include types of business ownership, marketing, finance, accounting, international business, human resources/management and employment law. This is an excellent choice for those curious as to how the business world operates or for those intending to study business in college. PREREQUISITE: None
PRINCIPLES OF FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING 173 (BNT17300)

This accelerated course is for the serious student who is interested in establishing a strong business foundation for college. The student will master generally accepted accounting principles, examine different types of businesses, explore business careers with industry professionals, and analyze financial statements of various companies. PREREQUISITE: None. Dual Credit: Students who take this course at Glenbrook North High School will receive four college credits in accounting through Oakton Community College.
BUSINESS LAW 161 (BLA16100)

Students will gain a greater understanding of the law and its role in business. General legal topics discussed include contract law, tort law, criminal law and how the legal system works in the United States of America. In addition, guest speakers, a field trip to the criminal court building, collaborative team projects, and small group activities allow for students to work together developing a greater understanding of the law. Students will participate in a mock trial with legal advice from lawyers in the community and the trial will be ruled by a county or state judge. PREREQUISITE: None
MANAGEMENT & LEADERSHIP 161 (BML16100)

This course introduces students to three core areas: managing yourself
(time management, being proactive, and goal setting), management functions (planning, organizing, directing and controlling) and leadership (how to motivate and inspire). Students will study the traits of an effective leader and work in collaborative team projects to gain hands-on experience investigating how to be a leader in the community. Field trips, computer simulations, case studies and activities will be incorporated.

MARKETING 161 (BMK16100)

Students will be introduced to marketing concepts including the marketing mix, promotions, public relations, personal selling, advertising, social media, and sports and entertainment marketing. Through project-based instruction, students will develop new products, create magazine and TV advertising, conduct and analyze market research, and design an advertising campaign to reinforce their study of marketing. Guest speakers and field trips may also be included.

SPORTS MANAGEMENT 161 (BMS16100)

Go beyond the action on the playing field to understanding the business behind sports. Sports Management exposes students to the “business side” of professional and collegiate teams and the prerequisite planning, management and execution necessary to run these organizations and their athletic events. This course focuses on all aspects of careers and related skills for the sports industry and many areas of business including marketing, law, management, ethics and finance will be studied with a sports perspective. If you are into sports, this is the class for you. PREREQUISITE: None
ENTREPRENEURSHIP: BUSINESS INCUBATOR 163 (BEB16300)

Throughout the INCubatoredu program, teams of students ideate and develop their own product or service startup in an attempt to gain investment funds in a final shark-tank style pitch event. Real entrepreneurs and business experts serve as volunteer coaches and mentors guiding student teams through the processes of developing hypotheses about a business concept, developing a real business, and testing those hypotheses. This cycle of experimentation is combined with foundational business content such as marketing and finance.

COMPUTER APPLICATIONS 161 (BTA16100)

Students will master Google applications, including Sheets (spreadsheets), Slides (presentations), Drawing (design), Sites (websites), Docs (word processing) and Forms (surveys and quizzes). They will also learn Pixlr (photo manipulation), WeVideo (video editing) and other applications to enhance their skills and efficiency. An introduction to coding will also be included. PREREQUISITE: None.
CONSUMER EDUCATION 161 (BCE16100)

This course offers a challenging learning opportunity for capable seniors
to study and analyze current consumer topics such as economics, taxation, investments, comparison shopping, budgeting, banking, credit, housing, automobiles, insurance, and identity theft. Extensive use of current events will lead into a short budget project. The students will also complete a stock project. This course fulfills the state consumer education requirement. PREREQUISITE: None
CONSUMER EDUCATION HONORS 171 (BCE17100)

This course offers a challenging learning opportunity for capable seniors to study and analyze current consumer topics such as economics, careers, insurance, taxation, investments, comparison shopping, budgeting, banking and credit. Extensive use of current events will be made as a lead-in to short research projects. Students will also be involved with peer teaching activities. This course fulfills the state consumer education requirement.
PREREQUISITE: Counselor recommendation.

Consumer Education satisfies the state competency requirement to give students basic knowledge of consumer issues. The areas of learning required by state law include consumer rights and responsibilities, consumer protection, comparison buying, consumer economics, budgeting, saving, investing, credit, taxes and insurance. This course is for those students who would meet with limited success in a traditional consumer education curriculum. PREREQUISITE: Counselor recommendation.
ADV CAREER PLACEMENT PROGRAM 161 (BPL00100 BPL00200)
GRADE: 11,12 LENGTH: 1 Sem CREDIT: .50 GPA: All Subject
This course is a cooperative work-study program designed for junior or senior students wishing to work part-time and receive school credit. Students in the Career Placement Program must have a stated career/work objective, be enrolled in a GBN course related to the objective and be recommended by the related course instructor, Instructional Supervisor, or school counselor. This program requires on-site training with an approved cooperating employer and evaluations of work performance by a school coordinator each grading period. Students must have reliable transportation to their jobs.
PREREQUISITE: Teacher recommendation.
