FRESHMAN BAND (MUB13300)
GRADE: 9 LENGTH: 2 Sem CREDIT: 1.00 GPA: All Subject
Freshman Band is preparatory to both Symphonic Band, Wind Symphony, and Wind Ensemble. Students work to develop individual and group playing skills, including tone production, technique, rhythm, and music theory. Additionally, students will develop their music appreciation, attitudes and habits. These skills are essential in the ongoing study of introductory high school band literature. Members of the Freshmen Band will perform in four concerts per year, including a chamber ensemble unit and any potential festivals. There is a semester rental fee for school owned instruments. PREREQUISITE: Previous playing experience in an instrumental (band) music ensemble or instructor’s permission
SYMPHONIC BAND (MUB14300)
GRADE: 10,11,12 LENGTH: 2 Sem CREDIT: 1.00 GPA: All Subject
Symphonic Band develops the skills of interpreting, performing, and sight reading music. These skills are essential in the ongoing study of intermediate high school band literature. Additionally, Symphonic Band provides opportunities for solo and small ensemble performance. Symphonic Band can be repeated to a maximum of 4.00 credits. Members of the Symphonic Band will perform in four concerts per year, including a chamber ensemble unit and any potential festivals There is a semester rental fee for school owned instruments. PREREQUISITE: Demonstration of musical competency determined by an audition and the musical balance needs of the organization, or successful completion of Freshman Band
SYMPHONIC WIND ENSEMBLE (MUB15300)
GRADE: 10,11,12 LENGTH: 2 Sem CREDIT: 1.00 GPA: All Subject
Wind Ensemble enables the student to develop advanced skills through performances of a wide variety of music for winds and percussion. A minimum of seven hours per week of out-of-class practice is required. Symphonic Wind Ensemble can be repeated to a maximum of 3.0 credits. Extra-curricular requirements: Attendance at all scheduled, extra-curricular performances and rehearsals including concerts, festivals, clinics, ceremonies and contests. There is a semester rental fee for school owned instruments. Students wearing tuxes are required to buy a prescribed shirt ensemble for concert wear. All students are required to wear a uniform (tuxedo or dress) from the Fine Arts department. PREREQUISITE: Demonstration of music competency (determined by an audition) and the musical balance needs of the organization, as well as the successful completion of Freshman Band.
JAZZ ENSEMBLE (MUJ1730E)
GRADE: 9,10,11,12 LENGTH: 2 Sem CREDIT: 1.00 GPA: All Subject
Jazz Ensemble is designed to develop individual and group skills in jazz performance and improvisation. Daily out-of-class practice is required. The Jazz Ensemble players are expected to be concurrent members of either Freshman Band, Symphonic Band, Wind Symphony, Wind Ensemble. The class meets from 7:05-7:50am on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, with select combos meeting on Wednesday. Students are expected to participate in the co-curricular concerts and contests that appear on the department calendar. There is a semester rental fee for school owned instruments. PREREQUISITE: Demonstration of musical competency determined by a spring audition with the director.
JAZZ LAB (MUJ16300)
GRADE: 9,10,11,12 LENGTH: 2 Sem CREDIT: .50 GPA: All Subject
Jazz Lab is designed to develop individual and group skills in basic jazz performance. Any members of the GBN Band program is welcome to join Jazz Lab, regardless of prior experience in jazz. Students may choose to double on a different instrument if they do not already play saxophone, trumpet, or trombone. The Jazz Lab members are expected to be concurrent members of either Freshman Band, Symphonic Band or Symphonic Wind Ensemble. The class meets from 7:05-7:50am on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, with select combos meeting on Friday. Students are expected to participate in the co-curricular concerts and festivals that appear on the department calendar. There is a semester rental fee for school-owned instruments. PREREQUISITE: Demonstration of musical competency determined by a spring audition with the director.

Concert Bands
Freshman Band
Freshman Band is the ensemble for all ninth grade students. In this ensemble, students will develop rhythmic foundations, individual musicianship, tone and intonation on their instrument. Students will perform in the Fall and Holiday Concerts, as well as the winter Chamber Ensemble Concert, and the Spring Concert. Students are assessed individually and as an ensemble and typically perform between grade 2.5-4 music.
Symphonic Band
Students in 10th-12th grade are eligible to perform in Symphonic Band. In Symphonic Band, the ensemble members focus on developing technical foundations in a variety of key signatures and continue to focus on developing musicality on their instrument. Students will perform in the Fall and Holiday Concerts, as well as the winter Chamber Ensemble Concert, and the Spring Concert. Students are assessed individually and as an ensemble and typically perform between grade 3-4 music.
Wind Ensemble
Students in 10th-12th grade are eligible to audition for Wind Symphony. In Wind Symphony, the ensemble members focus on developing technical foundations in a variety of key signatures and continue to focus on developing musicality on their instrument. Jazz at GBN
The Glenbrook North Band program has two curricular jazz ensembles that meet during early bird at 7:05am every day. Jazz can be taken as a 9th class if students are taking two electives. Both ensembles run at the same time every morning at 7:05am. Lab rehearses in E103 and Ensemble rehearses in E101.
Jazz Lab
This Glenbrook North Jazz Lab is open to all jazz musicians who either have or have not had experience in jazz band before. We cover a variety of literature, including swing, funk, rock, latin, blues, and ballads. In this ensemble, students develop their skills as individual musicians and as soloists. The ensemble performs at three concerts per year and performs in the annual North Shore Jazz Festival.
Note: all students are welcome in jazz band. Flute, clarinet, and oboe players double on saxophone. Horn players double on trumpet and all low brass will play trombone.
Jazz Ensemble
The Glenbrook North Jazz Ensemble is open to admittance by audition, which will take place in the fall. Students in Jazz Ensemble are proficient on their instrument and are comfortable soloing. The Jazz Ensemble plays a variety of literature and performs in three concerts each year, in addition to the North Shore Jazz Festival.
