MUSIC PRODUCTION & TECHNOLOGY 161 (MUE16100 MUE16200)

This course is for the student with little or no previous formal musical training who wishes to learn how to compose, remix, and produce electronic music. The majority of the class is driven by student-centered learning on the computer and individual projects. Students will learn to use the music notation software Sibelius and the digital audio workstations Pro Tools, Garage Band and Ableton Live to compose, manipulate, and remix music. Basic elements of music theory are also covered. PREREQUISITE: None

This course is an extension of the skills and techniques learned in MUE161 and includes more extensive work with the digital audio workstations. The majority of the class is individual project-based. Students will compose and produce their own original songs and develop more advanced remixing skills. Virtual instruments and digital audio recording will be explored as well as other music theory concepts including form and structure. PREREQUISITE: Music Production & Technology 161
INTRODUCTION TO MUSIC THEORY AND COMPOSITION (MUT16200)

This introductory course is designed to give students a fundamental knowledge of music writing, analysis and composition. Included will be a study of the basic principles of music theory, standard notation, scales, keys, intervals, chords, melody and harmony. The use of Sibelius is an integral part of the sequence of instruction. The course may be used as a primer for Advanced Placement Music Theory. Students enrolling in this course should be able to read standard musical notation. PREREQUISITE: None
AP MUSIC THEORY 183 (MUT18300)

Through the study of music literature and symbology, the class will explore four related concepts: composition, analysis, perception and cognition. At year’s end, the student will have been presented all the tools and understanding necessary to utilize these concepts to be successful on the AP Music Theory Test. Although this course is geared toward the AP test, the curriculum is not exclusive of AP materials. Students enrolled in AP Music Theory receive instruction that would be the equivalent of a typical college first year harmony course.
PREREQUISITE: Recommendation of the Music Department is required
ADVANCED MUSIC THEORY AND COMPOSITION (MUT87300N)

This course is designed specifically for the academically gifted music student. Its content is a continuation of Music Theory and Composition 283 with a focus on arranging, orchestrating, and composing.
PREREQUISITE: AP Music Theory 183 or Instructor Approval
GUITAR 161 (MUG16100)

In this introductory level course, students will learn basic guitar playing technique, tuning, note reading, guitar tablature, improvisation, and chord reading. No prior musical knowledge or playing experience is required. PREREQUISITE: Each student must provide his/her own acoustic guitar. No amplifiers or electric guitars are allowed in class
