Mathematics

The Glenbrook North Mathematics Department has an extensive curriculum designed to meet individual student needs.

With over 20 unique course offerings, including 4 unique AP courses, curriculum and programming is designed to foster and promote inquiry, collaboration, and problem solving. In many cases, students can access AP coursework as early as Sophomore year, allowing students to dual-enroll in math courses of interest. Our course progression and sequencing is designed to allow for smooth transitions between courses, thus enabling students to work towards their goals as they progress through their 4-year sequence.

Calculator Requirements

GBN supports the TI-Nspire CX II CAS and TI-Nspire CX II calculators.

Please note that CAS-equipped calculators are not permitted on the ACT. However, they are supported in all GBN math courses and permitted on all College Board's calculator-permitted tests, including the SAT and the AP Calculus, Chemistry, Physics, and Statistics exams.

Student Support

Math Resource Center (MRC)

Hours of Operation: 7:15 a.m. - 3:45 p.m.

The Math Resource Center’s purpose is to serve as a drop-in center to assist students with targeted questions/needs. The MRC is staffed by math teachers and math-certified Instructional Assistants and is open all blocks of the day including before/after school.
No appointments are needed and all GBN students are encouraged to stop in for homework help, classwork review, and assistance with test taking strategies.

Math Peer Tutors

Hours of Operation: 7:15 a.m. - 3:45 p.m.

GBN Math Peer Tutors is a peer-tutoring program which offers support in the Math Resource Center via scheduled 1:1 appointments between students and peer tutors. Peer tutors are vetted to be well-versed in the area of mathematics they are assigned to tutor in. When Peer Tutors are not actively scheduled with an appointment, they are available for walk-up questions in the Math Resource Center.
Math Peer Tutors are exceptionally helpful for students who have been absent from class or who need to catch up on missed material for a variety of reasons.

Math Enrichment Center (MEC)

Hours of Operation: 7:15 a.m. - 3:45 p.m.

The purpose of the MEC is to support students who are appropriately placed in their mathematics course at GBN but are struggling with either the course content or the prerequisite skills necessary to master that course content. Students referred to the MEC have previously sought extra help from either the Math Resource Center (MRC), GBN Math Peer Tutor Program, and/or their teacher.
GBN students who are identified through screeners or who are referred by staff members for additional support, meet with MEC staff for individual or small group support. Each student works specifically on an individualized pathway with material necessary for their success in current and future math courses .
