A 1995 graduate of Northern Illinois University, Schroeder worked as a volunteer assistant for the Northwestern swimming and diving program beginning in 2000. As a sprint coach for that perennial top-25 program, he mentored Olympic Trials qualifiers, Big Ten Champions, an NCAA champion, and U.S. National Finalists.
In addition to his duties with the Wildcats, Schroeder served as the head coach of the New Trier Swim Club in Winnetka, Illinois beginning in 2002. While at New Trier, he developed Olympic Trials qualifiers, U.S. Open finalists, and U.S. National finalists, and was named the Illinois Swimming Coach of the year on two occasions.
After finishing a career at NIU in which he served as team captain and was a two-time Illinois Collegiate Swimmer of the Year, Schroeder took on volunteer assistant coaching jobs at his alma mater and the University of Wisconsin.

He was co-captain of the 1999 Pan-American Games team, where he was a double silver medalist. The previous year, he was a member of the 1998 USA Goodwill Games Team. While at NIU, he was a three-time Mid-America Conference Swimmer of the Year, earning seven individual conference titles and three Conference records.

In 2008, Schroeder returned to Northwestern as an assistant, and was named head coach of the Men’s program in 2009. While at Northwestern, Schroeder coached Olympian and World Champion, Jordan Wilimovsky.
